Thanks to everyone that came out to the signing last night at Golden Apple Comics. I saw some familiar faces but also so many new ones. It is always an energizing experience to meet some people that enjoy your work and want to say hello. I hope you all enjoy the book, it was one of the hardest things to do but also one of the most rewarding. It seems things are always that way—the things that come out very special have pushed you to your limits-- there were many nights of banging my head against the table trying to crack this book-- many notebooks were filled.
This is also the first project in a long time where I haven't been plugged into the reception of something. Sure, I hear that people like it through other people and that's really cool, but even while working on Conventional Weapons I remember the internet being very much a part of the feedback and interaction, so it has been a long time since I have been a part of something that has been dropped into the world without looking back.
The decision to handle things this way was to keep the book as pure as possible, and an experiment of sorts. I missed the days of putting something out and only relying on your inner determination to see it through to the end. Sometimes you need to change things up, alter how you do things to find a new kind of groove.
The Young Animal imprint has kept me tremendously busy, as there are a lot of moving parts to the whole thing. But strangely, I have found myself making more music than I expected, having just recorded the first piece of music for Young Animal, something else that I thought would take some time to get started-- but the inspiration was there. I also got to write and record the song with a very special person, the same person I will be performing with at a charity function next weekend (9/24). Keep your eyes on this page for details, as I believe tickets are still available for the event-- it's pretty much a once in a lifetime thing-- and for a good cause!
Also, keep an eye out for a Doom Patrol Issue 1 Director's Cut, which I imagine will have a lot of goodies inside, as so much went into preparing the series-- there is a bunch of art and many words, many changes that occurred. I will let you all know when that will be available in stores.
Let’s see, what else? Oh, this is today's version of morning pages. Usually, the morning pages are very much stream of consciousness, just anything pouring out of me after I wake up, but it is nice to have an objective, such as communicating with you—feels a bit like pen pals. After writing this, I am right back into scripting Doom Patrol and handling my Young Animal duties for the day.
My wish/hope for you is that you get to make the things you want today, even if it is long after your daily tasks and you decide to stay up late and grind the creative gears. And if making things is your daily task then godspeed and good luck.
I think that's all the news for today, at least for the moment.
Sending you lots of love--
G
